Where the numbers come from
Exercise physiology rates activities in METs — multiples of resting metabolism. Walking at a normal pace is about 3.5 MET. One MET is roughly 1 kcal per kilogram of body weight per hour, so an hour of walking costs about 3.5 × weight kcal in total, of which 2.5 × weight is extra — the active part. At 4.8 km/h that works out to about 0.55 kcal per kg per kilometre, and with a 0.76 m stride a kilometre is about 1,300 steps.
Real life moves the number: hills and stairs add 30–50%, a brisk 6 km/h adds 10–20% per kilometre, and a heavier body simply spends more per step. Treat any table as ±20%.
How Podo counts calories
Podo shows Active Energy from Apple Health, not a steps-times-constant estimate. With an Apple Watch that figure comes from heart rate plus motion, personalised by your height, weight, age and sex; with an iPhone alone it comes from the motion sensors. The calorie ring fills against the goal you set, and tapping the number shows the source device and the period.
Common questions
How many calories does 10,000 steps burn?
Roughly 300 active calories for a 70 kg (155 lb) person walking at a normal pace — about 250 at 60 kg and 350 at 80 kg. Counting the calories you would have burned resting anyway, the total is closer to 400.
How many calories is one step?
About 0.03 active calories per step for a 70 kg person (0.04 including resting metabolism). The figure scales with body weight: heavier bodies spend more energy per step.
Do I burn more calories walking faster?
Per kilometre, walking speed changes little until you get to a brisk 6 km/h or more. Per minute, faster is more. Hills, stairs and carrying weight raise the cost noticeably; a treadmill with handrails lowers it.
Why does my watch show a different number?
Apple Watch estimates active energy from heart rate and motion, personalised by your age, sex, height and weight. That is a measurement of your effort, not a formula from steps — so it is usually more accurate than any table, and it is what Podo shows.
