How far is 10,000 steps? Steps to km and miles

10,000 steps is roughly 7.6 kilometres, or 4.7 miles, at an average walking stride of 0.76 m (2.5 ft). Your own distance depends mostly on height: enter it below for a closer estimate.

Why stride length is the whole answer

Distance is steps × stride, and stride is the only variable. A common rule of thumb puts walking stride at about 41–42% of height: 160 cm → 0.66 m, 175 cm → 0.72 m, 190 cm → 0.79 m. Walking fast lengthens it, walking uphill or in a crowd shortens it, and running roughly doubles it — a 10,000-step run can be 12 km or more.

That is why two people with identical step counts get different distances, and why any table is an estimate. If you want the real number, measure a known distance — a 400 m track lap — and divide by the steps it took.

How Podo measures distance

Podo does not multiply steps by a constant. It reads the Walking + Running Distance that your iPhone or Apple Watch writes to Apple Health. Those devices estimate your actual stride from the motion sensors and calibrate it with GPS during outdoor walks, so the distance you see in Podo is personal — and usually closer to reality than this table. Tap the distance in the app to see which device recorded it and over which period.

Common questions

How many kilometres is 10,000 steps?

About 7.6 km (4.7 miles) for an average stride of 0.76 m. A taller person with a 0.85 m stride covers about 8.5 km; a shorter person with a 0.65 m stride about 6.5 km.

How many steps are in 1 km?

About 1,300 steps at an average stride of 0.76 m. Count on 1,200–1,500 depending on height and pace.

How many steps are in a mile?

About 2,100 steps at an average walking stride, or roughly 1,900–2,400 depending on height and pace.

Why does my phone show a different distance for the same steps?

iPhone and Apple Watch do not multiply steps by a fixed stride. They estimate your actual stride from motion data and calibrate it with GPS on outdoor walks, so the distance in Apple Health — and in Podo — reflects your real walking, not an average.
