Can you count steps on iPhone without an Apple Watch?
Updated 2026-10-10
Short answer
Yes. Every iPhone has a motion coprocessor that counts steps, walking distance and floors climbed whenever you carry it, and saves them to Apple Health with no setup. A step counter app such as Podo reads that data, so it works on an iPhone alone — the watch only adds what a phone in your pocket cannot feel, like heart rate during the night.
What the iPhone records by itself
- Steps, walking and running distance, and flights of stairs — counted all day while the phone is on you.
- Active calories estimated from that movement.
- GPS routes when an app records a walk, run, hike or ride.
- Nothing while the phone sits on a desk: if you leave it behind, those steps are not counted.
What works in Podo without a watch
- Steps, distance and calories in three rings, with stats, records and weekly goals.
- Walks detected automatically from your step data — no start button.
- GPS walks, hikes and rides, saved to Apple Health with the route. Free.
- Heart rate and HRV measured in 30 seconds with a finger on the iPhone camera.
- Sleep score from sleep you enter by hand in a few taps.
- Four Home Screen widgets.
What still needs a wearable
Anything measured while you sleep or all day long on the skin: sleep stages, overnight HRV and the recovery score built on it, and continuous heart rate. Podo reads these from any tracker that syncs to Apple Health — Apple Watch, WHOOP, Oura, Garmin or Fitbit — and you can choose which source has priority.
Common questions
Is the iPhone step count accurate without a watch?
It is accurate for the time you carry the phone. The usual gap is not the sensor but the habit: steps taken without the phone — around the house, at the gym with the phone in a locker — are not counted.
Do I need to keep the app open to count steps?
No. The iPhone counts in the background and stores the data in Apple Health; Podo shows everything that was recorded, including days before you installed it.
Is Podo free without an Apple Watch?
Yes. Step tracking, walks, GPS workouts, camera heart rate, sleep entry, stats and widgets are free. The optional Pro subscription only adds four AI features.
